Write your First Formula
Learn how to write your first formula in Stackby
Formulas turn raw fields into calculated insights—totals, variances, percentages, due‑date math—so updates happen automatically as data changes.
What is the formula field?
A formula field computes a value per record using operators (+, −, ×, ÷) and functions (dates, text, logic, math), referencing other fields by name inside braces, like {Price} or {Due date}.
Writing basic calculations with the formula field
1. Add
Use + to total values across fields, for example an invoice sum:
Example: {Design Fee} + {Copywriting} + {Hosting}
2. Subtract
Use − to get a difference, like budget variance:
Example: {Budget} − {Actuals}
3. Multiply
Use × for amounts like rate times quantity:
Example: {Rate} * {Hours}
4. Divide
Use ÷ to create ratios or percentages:
Example: {Units in stock} / {Capacity}
Take action: Write your first formula
Add two number fields: “All tasks” and “Completed tasks.”
Add a new field of type Formula.
Enter: {Completed tasks} / {All tasks}
Set the formatting to Percent for an automatic “% complete” that updates as counts change.
